November

Better late than never...

Spotify is the eighth wonder of the world. It may not have the most comprehensive library, nor the fairest of royalty policies (0.0040ish pence per  play?!) BUT as a tool for sharing and discovering music it's as good as it gets and it's still in its infancy.
Some kind person has put every song that Tom Ravenscoft has played on his 6music show this year (1000+ songs) and the majority of them are brilliant, hence this months compilation is heavily influenced by Mr.Ravenscroft's choices.

Seeing the Wedding Present perform Seamonsters was a high point of the year, I love that record SO much.
"Mothers" is another brilliant bside from that era. I also don't know how I missed Jackson C Frank until now. There was a brilliant Radio 4 programme about him which made a very wet drive to Cardiff temporarily enjoyable...

October

This month I saw ...Trail of Dead (and discovered their brilliant eponymous first album), King Kruel (" I'm losing my edge, the kids are coming up from behind"), the amazing Metz,  Wild Nothing and TOY.

Why does no one talk about Sufjan Steven's first record 'The Sun Came'? It's amazing - maybe my favourite of his. Its so raw. Check out The Oracle Said Wander, sounds more like Slint than Sufjan. There's also a couple of album worthy B sides from a couple of albums I love (Idlewild- Forgot to Follow and Wedding Present's- Crawl.)

Enjoy...

September 2012

New Dinosaur Jr, new Wild Nothing, new Woods, new Bob Mould, Toys debut album, seeing Bo Ningen play in a hotel room and going to Festival No 6 has made for an epic month.

Finally getting my hands on Easter's "Innocence Man" was exciting and I had no idea just how good it was going to be. It totally blew me away - probably the most ambitious record I've heard from any local band. Seriously go and buy it --> here. I havn't included it on the comp. You'll have to trust me or try it out on Spotify.

Elsewhere, I've been checking out more Yo La Tengo records (all amazing), finally getting into Chavez's Ride The Fader and revisiting Sonic Youth's Sonic Nurse LP.

Enjoy...

August 2012

It took me literally two days to get hold of 'Look Now' by Smog and it was worth every minute. Bill Callahan is one of the greatest song writers of all time. So many great records. There's a great tune from the new Sebadoh EP too. Finally got round to listening to The Fall's Slates ep which is one of their best releases.  Also been making my way through Pavement's brilliant early eps; Forklift  from 1990's Demolition Plot J-7 is  just amazing. Plus check out the TrioVD tune it sounds like a Chilli Peppers tune in a food blender!

June 2012

Found loads of great tunes this month. I finally got  into Emperor Tomato Ketchup by Stereolab and 154 by Wire - both have been on my radar for years.

There's a couple of tunes by some really small, local bands (Jess Bryant and Driver Drive Faster) and I was in two minds if I should I include them or not. I have done for now. Please, please buy their stuff - preferably from their bandcamps - your money goes to the artist, not the middleman!

Hope you like...

April 2012

This month was whittled down from 60 potential songs, so it's all gold people. Seeing the legendary Jandek literally round the corner from my house was a such a strange experience. European Jewel off his 1982 album 'Chair beside a Window' is the closest thing I can find to matching what he and his band played that night.

Lots of people have told me they've had difficulty downloading the tunes so I'm switching to sendspace. If folk are still struggling email me - lauriehulme@hotmail.co.uk and i'll mail big file you the rar file..
